Diono Radian RXT Vs Chicco Nextfit – Choosing a car seat is among the first and most important decisions parents will make. Primarily, safety ratings are at the top of our check list– luckily industry standards have elevated and for the most part, the options you face in the car seat isle of the baby supply super store or online will satisfy concerns. Both the Radian RXT from Diono and Chicco’s ever popular Nextfit provide safety, nice aesthetics, and colorful options. When deciding on a seat, keep in mind its practicality: how it will be used, how it will fit in your back seat, if it will be moved from one car to another with regularity, if it will be used for air travel, how long your child may fit in the seat.
Diono has perhaps found the perfect means of allowing an infant car seat to grow with your child. Do not be fooled by its slim profile and sleek styling. One lift of the Radian RXT and you know the construction is solid. Diono’s SuperLATCH systems makes installation a breeze. Our expectation of an infant car seat might hold for high sides and a more cradle-like feel, but the security of the RXT comes from proper installation and harness placement.
Sometimes those high profile sides give the appearance of security, but if you have not installed the seat correctly, or fastened your child appropriately, safety is no guarantee. The Radian RXT moves from rear-facing to forward facing, accommodating your child up to 80 lbs in a five point harness, after which the harness can be removed and the seat used as a full-back booster for a child up to 120 lbs. This is the only seat you will ever need, from birth onward. As an added bonus, the Radian RXT is easily folded for travel and can even be carried like a backpack through the airport terminal. The color options and styling look great in the back seat, too.
Chicco has made its mark in the baby gear world in the past few years and has lived up to its name with the NextFit. Previous owners of Chicco seats fitted with the “KeyFit” feature, will attest to to the ease of install offered by Chicco. Guides to assist in the placement of the seat in your car are clearly labeled and the adjustment straps are easy to use and additionally labeled for guidance. The NextFit can used for your child up to 40 lbs in rear-facing mode and until they reach 65 lbs/50 in while in forward facing mode. NextFit can be purchased in either standard or “ZIP” model. The zip model allows easy removal of the cover for washing, (if you have ever taken the cover off your car seat to wash, you know hoe challenging the process can be), and while it is approved for air travel, you will definitely need a cart to get it to your boarding gate. They styling closely echos the late KeyFit with a variety of two-toned options.

The Verdict
It cannot be stressed enough: the key to safety is proper use. Always bear in mind the limits of your car’s backseat when choosing a car seat for your child AND think of what you want most out of its functionality. If you think the seat will more than likely stay in a primary car and you are vigilant about switching modes as your child grows, remembering you will need to purchase an accommodating booster once the reach the weight/height limit of the NextFit, the Chicco wins. However, if you are looking for something that can grow with your child and move with you, look into the clean looking Radian RXT.
