Like many other mommies online today, you have made the decision to use cloth diapers for your little one and have even narrowed it down to one of the leading brands – BumGenius. But now you are sitting with the predicament of deciding which style of BumGenius to go with. So to help you decide which style is right for you, we have created this short, fact-based comparison; BumGenius 4.0 vs Freetime.
First thing to take note of is that both styles, the 4.0 and the Freetime are a one-size-fits-all. You can use either style until your baby weighs 35 lbs, so this will not be a deciding factor. The main difference however lies in the absorption system used; The 4.0 uses a pocket system, where an external absorption pad is placed into a single “pocket” on the interior of the diaper. The Freetime on the other hand uses an all-in-one system for the absorption system, which is basically two microfiber pads attached to the diaper that fold over each other to create a double layer absorption “pad” for the diaper. These can never be removed and form part of the diaper. See also : BumGenius 3.0 Vs 4.0.
Both styles have the same result, a cloth diaper with an absorption area. The fundamental difference comes when washing these diapers. Since the 4.0 has removable inserts, they need to be removed before the diapers are washed. And doing that on a soiled diaper can become quite a messy business! Then after the diapers have been washed, the inserts need to be put back in all their pockets – quite a time-consuming process if you have 30 or 40 diapers! One advantage of washing the 4.0’s though, is that drying them is a really quick process because they can simply go in the dryer.
The Freetime’s on the other hand do not need their inserts removed before washing – because they are attached to the diaper. So all that time of removing and then re-inserting pads on laundry day is saved – But the freetime’s can not be put in the dryer like the 4.0’s. Making washing them easier and quicker, but drying them a lot longer. There are three other disadvantages of Freetime’s though, and that is cleaning a soiled diaper can be a lot more difficult than the 4.0’s because there are more moving parts and places for the poo to get stuck! Also the absorption pads can move around a bit if your child is active, causing leaks – something that is impossible with the 4.0’s pocket-based system. And lastly, if the absorption pads tear or become worn out it’s more expensive to replace as you would need to replace the entire diaper rather than just a single external insert as with the 4.0.

Conclusion
Your choice between these two options would really depend on your personal preferences and lifestyle. If you have an extremely active child and simply can’t do with the possibility of the Freetime’s pads moving around – then you will have to bite the bullet and be prepared to spend the extra time on laundry day with the 4.0’s. If however your child is not too active, and you don’t mind waiting the extra time for the Freetime’s to dry (since you can be doing something else in that time) – then they may be the better option. So to make your choice, you simply need to consider the main differences of the two styles as compared to your preferences.
